Hello written and illustrated by Fiona Woodcock, published by Greenwillow Books.
Fiona Woodcock's beautiful picture book, Hello, is an invitation to summer. Published in 2019, it is worth revisiting every year for the pure joy of the illustrations and simple, spare text that is fun to read aloud repeatedly.
As seen on the cover, two siblings are placed perfectly on the two Ls in "Hello." From there, the reader will join them on a day of carefree fun that defines summer.
Each image is accompanied by a fitting word with a double LL, reminding the reader of the pair of children and offering an alliteration that brings a unique rhythm to the reading. Even with only one word per page, this very intentionally chosen word enahnced by its corresponding image creates a story of siblings, camaraderie, joy, and amusement. But alas, their mother calls them back to the car. The day ends at a campsite with marshmallows and a lullaby as many memorable summer days do.
While children will enjoy the fun vocabulary and vibrant illustrations, grown-ups will also appreciate a sense of nostalgia.
Imagine It!
In this story, the text is composed of words each containing a double LL. Say that sound out loud. How does it feel on your tongue?
Imagine other words that are spelled with a double LL. Or, say aloud other sounds in some of your favorite words. Once you've decided on a sound, write down the letters that create that sound. Now, list as many words you can think of with those letters and that sound. You can do this with a friend or grown-up as well. You could also post this list on the fridge or anywhere you would see it every day and then add to it whenever another word comes to mind.
Imagine a story where your words might be used. Practice, play around, start over. It's all fun!
Imagine the illustrations you could add to your story, then make your own book! You could use individual pieces of paper or fold your own little blank book. Click this link to see how.
Imagine all the possibilities!
