A Book that Reaches New Heights

Alis the Aviator written by Danielle Metcalfe-Chenail and illustrated by Kalpna Patel, published by Tundra Books, an imprint of Penguin Random House.

Raising readers requires a variety of books, and alphabet books are particularly interesting to the youngest book lovers and earliest readers. This unique ABC book goes way beyond the traditional "A is for Apple" and introduces readers to aviation terms. Children will imagine themselves flying high in a variety of aircraft, from the Avrow Arrow to Zeppelins!

Inspired by the first Indigenous woman in Canada to receive her private and commercial ratings, the back matter offers a thorough history of Dr. Alis Kennedy and her accomplishments thus far. Also included is a glossary, providing readers more detailed descriptions of aircraft featured in the text.

Finally, Kalpna Patel's unique cut paper art is particularly engaging in its seemingly simple but intricate and bold design.

Imagine It!

Imagine an alphabet book about you!

Think of an interest that starts with the same letter as your name. For example: K is for Kyle the Kite Flyer. Then, see how many other letters in the alphabet relate to a word associated with this interest... S is for Sky, W is for Wind, etc. It's ok if you can't think of a word for each letter, but it's fun to try!
